About WordGamesHelper

WordGamesHelper is an independent, free set of tools for people who play word games: a word unscrambler for Scrabble and Words with Friends racks, a pattern lookup, a browsable word list with a page for every word, a word search generator for classrooms and families, and a weekly strategy blog.

Where the words come from

The word list is built from ENABLE, a public-domain lexicon of about 173,000 words, plus a maintained set of additions covering every current two-letter word, the Q-without-U words, and the headline dictionary updates of 2014, 2018, and 2022. Slurs removed from tournament play in 2020 are excluded. The result is a close match for North American Scrabble and Words with Friends play, but it is not the official tournament list. If a word is missing or should not be there, tell us.

Definitions come from WordNet 3.1, a lexical database published by Princeton University. Scrabble scores use the standard English tile values; Words with Friends scores use that game's own values.

How it is built

The site is a Django application with a pure-Python solver. Searches you type are stored anonymously to power the "recent" and "popular" lists, and nothing else about you is kept. The full details are in the privacy policy. There is also a free JSON API for developers, described at /llms.txt.

Who runs it

WordGamesHelper is a one-person project maintained in spare time. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Scrabble, Words with Friends, Wordle, or their owners. It is funded by advertising, which keeps the tools free.

Fair play

These tools are for practice, study, puzzle making, and casual games. Using a word finder during a competitive or rated game is against most games' rules. We would rather you used the site to learn the two-letter words than to win one argument.
